For all the business leaders out there, there's a lot we can learn from unexpected sources – one overlooked source is the world of fantasy cinema. Ray Harryhausen, a pioneer of stop-motion effects, crafted worlds and creatures that continue to captivate us to this day. 🎥🐉
One standout from Harryhausen's collection for me is
"The Golden Voyage of Sinbad".
This film, with its unique place in cinema history, featured the charming slave girl Margiana expertly played by Caroline Munro. 🌟
I recently had the privilege of meeting Munro, who shared her experiences working with Harryhausen. As she spun tales of the way mystical creatures and heroic quests were wove into her performance,
I was struck by the parallels between these stories and the journey of business leadership. 🧙 ♀️🗺️
Munro shared a motivational quote that resonated with her, a line from Sinbad:
"Remember to tie your camel". 🐪
This phrase, while initially funny, carries a deeper meaning. It's a call to leaders, urging us to take responsibility for our actions and outcomes. It reminds us that we can't blame others when things go wrong, nor should we expect success without effort. 💪
In a memorable scene from the film, Sinbad shoots an arrow to escape a well, his action was decisive but required no small amount of luck in avoiding a fatal fall. It's a perfect metaphor for the risks and rewards of leadership. Sinbad takes a determined step, and fortune follows. This is reminiscent of how a well-crafted vision statement in business should work - a bold declaration of where the company aims to be, guiding its journey. 🏹🍀
In our professional lives, it's easy to become complacent, to pass blame, or to expect success to come to us. But as Munro pointed out, we need to "tie our camels". We need to be bold, brave, and ready to take responsibility for our journey, that first step and perhaps the bravest is to write down what shape you want your business to have in the future, thereby taking accountability. 🚀
Let's take this lesson from the inspirational Caroline Munro and Harryhausen's world of fantasy, and apply it to our own leadership journeys.
Remember to "tie your camels". You might be surprised at how far you can journey when you take responsibility and embrace the audacity of hope and action. 🌈🌟
